There is a lot of material about how improving your performance at work, keep focus, make more and on and on…
But there is some things escaping from us and them are really simple to manage.
One regular day at my work, I was doing my stuff and “suddenly” I had the browser open in Facebook page. I back to do my stuff and 5 minutes later I was looking at an empty folder in my mail box trying to realize what I had to do, or what I suppose to be doing…
Something is getting my attention away, but what? What is taking my focus out?
So I realized: Every time I run something heavy in my machine, I got distracted, for instance: After two months without restart my machine, running 4 docker images, when I was trying to open some project at Visual Studio, it took about 20 seconds… this gap of time is enough to distract my self and spend time in the web, with nonsense things.
And to be honesty, this is quite common. I always heard histories like: I was working in a big project that took 20 minutes to compile, so I decided to take a cup of coffee with my friends.
To be honestly there is no problem at all have a coffee time. But is quite obvious when we have a poor performance with something, is natural get other thing to occupy/distract the mind.
And the guilt is: The computer!
Yes, in almost every time, the computer is slow to perform the kind of work it stands for (I said almost every time… I’m aware there is others causes).
To fix my problem with the distractions, I just restarted my computer. But I had others computers, in others jobs, really slow (or not good enough). And it is easy to be unproductive in a scenario like that.
So, if you want a good performance and delivery from your team, invest in good equipment!
If somebody just take a few seconds to open and compile the project, there will be no time to open the browser and spend time at Facebook or other things (and no excuses).
This way it will be easy to keep focus and delivery a good work, in a good time!
